And for the most part, his delivery matches the weight of the story very nicely, though it does feel a little flat at times. I could listen to him for hours at a stretch. Normally I find Todd McLaren's smooth and dulcet tone addicting. Objectively the performance is pretty good, but not great. The characters feel real, their interactions and actions are genuine and the world is so detailed and honest that you buy every second of it. Its so grounded and believable, yet fantastic at the same time. The entry point into the extended lore of my all-time favorite fictional universe, this story is so superbly written that I can disappear into it completely and not notice the hours flying by. Phenomenal story - problematic performance Just gotta look past these inconsistencies. Now I seen on reddit that they came out with a rewritten version of this book in 2011 fixing the my second and third issue, and this audio book came out in 2018 so you'd think they'd use the correct version of the book for it but i guess not. However there's no mention of them until the invasion of Reach. All halo lore states that's the elites were the first alien race to join the covenant and they are the leaders of the covenant armies.

And lastly, there's absolutely no mention of the covenant elites if the first 3 quarters of the book. There's even a point where Cortana says that the Pillar of Autumn was refitted in 2550, and yet at the start of the chapter it states its 2542. The book keeps saying the date of the events going on is 2542, if you played any of the games you'd know that they actually take place in 2552. First issue is pretty minor, it has to do with production, from time to time the sound of the narrator will get a little quiet or loud before or after some of the speaking points of the book. Now, since this was written by and independent author, and not bungie(the creators of halo) a lot of what happens at the end of the book isn't actually canon to the halo universe.

But a got some issues with it, 3 to be exact. This is my first time reading, or listening, to any of the books and I gotta say, this book was amazing. I've played every game at least 3 times over with exception of Halo infinite. This is the electrifying origin story of Spartan John-117 - the Master Chief - and of his legendary, unstoppable heroism in leading the resistance against humanity’s possible extinction. And Halsey could never guess that this child will eventually become the final hope against an even greater peril engulfing the galaxy - the inexorable confrontation with a theocratic military alliance of alien races known as the Covenant. Catherine Halsey has been hard at work on a top-secret program that could bring an end to the conflict.and it starts with 75 children, among them a six-year-old boy named John. After exhausting all strategies to keep seething colonial insurrections from exploding into a full-blown interplanetary civil war, the UNSC has one last hope. But the United Earth Government and the United Nations Space Command is struggling to control this vast empire. Humanity has expanded beyond Earth’s system to hundreds of planets that colonists now call home.
